1. Galveston Island State Park
Enjoy a soothing beach stroll alone or with your loved ones and spot the undeveloped barrier island habitats. These beautiful natural areas are crucial for conservation and attract a variety of bird species, especially during the spring and fall bird migrations. Unwind and explore all of the best of Galveston Island’s natural habitat. The 2,000-acre park is open daily and charges a $5 per person entry fee, children 12 and under are free.
2. Galveston Bay Kayaking
Tote your kayak to the Galveston Bay kayak launch area. It’s located just off the bay road before you reach the bayside camping area. Kayaking is a great way to enjoy a scenic, and solitary, workout away from the threat of crowds. Just remember to follow the CDC recommended safety precautions and avoid crowds greater than 10 people. Kayaking is another great way to savor all of nature’s splendor while having a reaffirming jolt of good old-fashioned fun.
3. Go Birding Watching
Did you know that Galveston Island is one of the top locations in the country for birding? Galveston island sees more than 300 different bird species throughout the year. One of the more popular pastimes is birding by car and bird biking: birding from your bike. Maintaining recommended social distancing is very easy to do while birding. You’ll enjoy spotting Songbirds, White Pelicans, Baltimore Orioles, Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Painted and Indigo Buntings, and many more beautiful species of migrating and local birds.
